As graduate students at UC Berkeley, we noticed that top job opportunities were too often reserved for candidates from selective universities with polished resumes and strong industry connections. These preferences overshadowed applicants who, despite lacking pedigree, possessed true talent and ambition.
Recruiting candidates based on school, resume, or connections alone is highly competitive, inefficient, and costly for employers. This approach also leads to a persistent lack of diversity. Traditional recruiting platforms rely on resume data and keywords, producing a homogeneous pool of candidates. Smart companies recognize that an overly narrow focus and a lack of diversity limit their competitiveness by tapping into a small sliver of the qualified labor pool.
We proposed a revolutionary approach: what if hiring started with evaluating candidates' skills rather than their educational pedigree? This shift focuses on abilities rather than credentials, promising a more efficient and effective hiring process. We developed a recruitment platform centered around simulations and assessment grading, addressing the needs of modern hiring. Thus, Skillful.ly was born.
We envision a labor market that is more fair, inclusive, and skills-centric. We aim to build a better and more sustainable workforce through inclusive and meritocratic hiring practices. Recognizing the global impact this shift can have on the economic mobility of aspiring workers, we incorporated Skillful.ly as a Public Benefit Corporation to ensure its long-term accessibility for years to come.
